BIG CHANGE
So I have some pretty big news for you all. 11 days ago I started to wean the modified atkins diet- as of today I can eat 35 g of carbohydrates! And the biggest challenge so far? Knowing how to get to that number! But thats a pretty good challenge to be presented with, right?
I started out by immediately taking out my Ketovie drink (which I have previously mentioned), and lowering the amount of fat I have everyday by about 1 tbsp every few days (so pretty gradually). The food I was pining for, though I oddly didn’t even love that much before
the diet, was a peach. A nice juicy peach with the perfect consistency. That was the first food I ate when I started to increase and wow was it amazing! I started out by eating half of it at one meal, about 5 grams of net carb, then the other half at another meal to distribute the increase of carbs.
I really enjoyed the first time I had yogurt in almost 4 years, while watching a classic musical (of course). The yogurt I am currently eating is 7 net grams of carb.
When I had my appointment with my dietician and neurologist (Bobbi Henry and Dr. Mackenzie Cervenka at Johns Hopkins), they told me I could eat bread, potatoes, rice-foods that I thought I would NEVER eat again because they are so high in carbs! However, lo-and-behold, I have been eating low-carb bread for about a week! It is pretty incredible and mind blowing to me the food i have added in to my diet. I have even eaten a good amount of popcorn in one sitting!
Of course, there are possible drawbacks and negative side affects to this, just like any other change in seizure medication/treatment. I am currently increasing 5g of carbs every 3 days. If I feel weird or have any seizures, I will go back down 5 grams of carbs and see how I feel and what happens. Thankfully, I don’t have to go all the way back down to 20 grams of carbs.
I will be doing an EEG in August to see how my brain is reacting to this change in treatment, however the one I had in January was the best one I have EVER had (no seizures and a few spikes, meaning I still have the potential for seizures).
I will keep you all updated on this very exciting chapter!
Seize the day!
