Smol update: I got over myself and joined a gym and now I go outside more
Hi! I made a sad AF (here) post about being stuck in a rut and needing exercise but being held back by anxiety and fibromyalgia.
I changed jobs not too long ago and the social mix at my new place is much friendlier and healthier, most of my new colleagues gym a lot and are generally healthy and active without that miserable cyclical diet nattering that you tend to find in offices and it’s kinda having a nice effect on me cause I wanna be able to keep up with them.
I joined pure gym at the end of October and I’ve now settled into going Mon, Wed, Fri, I was fully terrified the first time I went and immediately scuttled into the women’s only bit where they have exactly 2 elliptical machines, 2 rowers, a rotary torso and the sitting knees out and knees in machines and a few dumbells and basically after doing two minutes on the elliptical and then wobbling off it and sitting on the floor feeling like an absolutely garbage human and like I was completely wasting my time, the lady on the other machine hopped off and said very kindly to me that the first time she ever got on one, she could only do two minutes too.
She may have been lying to make me feel better but it worked, and it made me go back the next day, and then I bought some gym shoes that my feet didn’t keep falling out of when I was on the rowing machine, I kept going, got a few sets of gym kit so I can just throw a bag together in the morning, change after work and go right to the gym on the way home.
I feel better, obviously I know you can’t unpick 4 years of depression meds eating and hermitude in a month but I feel sturdier and I’m in less pain. I haven’t needed to use a walking stick, I wear a Fitbit to make sure I’m exercising in the right heart rate zone and also to make sure I don’t have a heart attack haha.
So, I now have been to 80% of the areas inside of the gym and I’m doing the following:
Treadmill: 30 mins moderately fast paced walk @ 45% incline then incline up and speed up until I have to stop ~4/5mins, bpm 160-178
Dumbbells: skull crushers, bicep curl to overhead press, upright row, overhead tricep extensions, bent over row. Pulled from a google list of five arm dumbbell exercises, I do them every time two lots of 15 reps, weights have increased from 1kg to 3kg
Machines: I do the rotary torso, the knees out and knees in ones, and when I’m feeling particularly feisty from the endorphins or I don’t have to rush home for anything I do a few sets on the main gym machines like the seated rower and leg press and the chest press thing also.
I know it probably sounds like not much but, it’s a huge difference for me and I feel a little stronger and and like I have better stamina every day. My MH gets a little happy boost every time and I look forward to going now c:
If anyone has any advice on where to take my workout from here, or any suggestions on caffeine free pre workout stuff that might help me push on and do more cardio pls advise :D
Tl;dr: I posted here about being big and sad and borderline agoraphobic. Got over myself and joined a gym, feels good man.
