Is metabolic damage a real thing?
As the title says I’m wondering if metabolic damage is actually a real thing? In eating disorder recovery I was told my metabolism was damaged and I probably wouldn’t ever be able to lose weight like I had before and that I am stuck at my current weight. Does this actually have any scientific basis? They focused on set point theory (basically everyone’s body has a set point weight that your body will try and defend at all costs. Once you end up obese your body will typically try and defend that new weight even if it was different previously). What has everyone’s experience been whether it was eating disorder related or just yo-yo dieting?
I’ve had an eating disorder for 6 years (cycling through anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder). I’ve been through recovery and have normalized my eating. Before my eating disorder started I was 135lbs and 5’5. Due to binge eating my weight went up and went up very very quickly (I’m talking 60lbs in a matter of months). I no longer have the underlying psychological issues that cause my binge eating in the first place so I’m no longer at risk for it. During my recovery period I gained 30lbs and I am now sitting at 225lbs and I am 5’5. All my doctors would like me to lose weight (I have many chronic health conditions, including PCOS). So far I have been eating 1400cal per day and trying to exercise as much as possible. I feel like it’s very easy to gain weight but very hard to lose weight in my case. Is this metabolic damage or am I most likely overestimating what I’m eating?
