Health/weigh-in update of July 11, 2018

I’m out of the zone… the prediabetic zone, that is. Two years ago, in July 2016, my blood work came in with a fasting glucose level of 6.9, suggesting I was prediabetic. The following year it was at 6.4 and this week, in my latest blood test, it was at 5.5 (which is close to normal). I chalk this up to intermittent fasting (which I started in late 2016 and turned up a few notches along the way until I now eat in a four-hour window daily) and the ketogenic diet (which is, essentially, low carbohydrate and high fat) which I began in late 2017.

Further on intermittent fasting and prediabetes, I recently read a book by Dr. Jason Fung (a kidney specialist in Toronto, Ontario, Canada) called The Diabetes Code that was published this year. In it, Fung details how fasting can be a powerful tool in preventing and reversing type-2 diabetes. Basically, fasting can reduce the amount of sugar in the human body, which is at the crux of diabetes, Fung argues. He does caution that people who have diabetes already would be wise to use fasting under the supervision of a doctor, as those on insulin can drive their blood sugar too low with unsupervised fasting.

With my own continued fasting I fully expected my weight to go down at my biweekly weigh-in and shot of fluanxol (one of the medications I take for my bipolar disorder) at Woodstock Hospital in Ontario, Canada today. That was particularly true since, on the weekend, I went shopping for shorts and was happy to find I was down to a 44-inch size (down from my most recent size of 46 and down from an all-time high of 56, when I weighed 400 pounds). Also, I was down a notch on my belt.

As it turns out, my weight this time around was 276.1 pounds, down 2.2 pounds from two weeks prior. Perhaps I can also credit this to exercise (my exercises of choice are weightlifting and walking, which could have put on muscle and explained my weight). As for my blood pressure, it was 133 over 79. This has been fairly constant in months of late and I credit this to my overall weight loss.
