For some reason, I can’t maintain a calorie defecit without the appetite suppressing effects of intense exercise. I’ve been a runner for a while, but fell out of things in grad school, during which I also gained 50+ pounds. For the past year, I’ve been relentlessly trying to diet through calorie restriction alone to no avail. Obsessively logging things into MFP only made me chronically pre-occupied with food,leading to counter productive binges.

About 1.5 months ago, I started HIIT runs (interval training more or less) after reading an article on their effectiveness and noticed an immeadiate decrease in my appetite, and as a result, stopped bingeing and saw the numbers on the scale go down.

Additionally, I’m actually excited to go to the gym to complete a work out now. The beauty of HIIT training is that it is easy to stick with for most people as opposed to steady state cardio, because that feeling of “oh god, do I really have 20 more minutes of straight running left? I’m too tired to make it that long!” is significantly minimized in a HIIT work out, during which you aren’t required to run/jog/cycle/whatever for more than a few minutes at any given time max. As an added bonus, HIIT work outs create an after burn effect that allows you to burn more cals at rest than you would with steady state cardio. HIIT has also been shown to decrease a person’s appetite for up to 24 hours after a work out.

For anyone who has struggled with diet alone in the past, I highly recommend HIIT training.
