Ketosis and the Menstrual Cycle

As all of you are aware by now, my wife and I are both women. And if you didn’t know that already, well, there you go. We’re both on this ketosis journey, and we’re about one week away from having been in ketosis for a whole month. So, what do you know? Our menstrual cycles show up.

Now ketosis helps your body rapidly lose weight by consuming stored fat as fuel. When women have too much stored fat on their bodies, sometimes it can affect their hormones, which alters their menstrual cycles by a little, or a lot. So for women starting out keto, keep in mind your cycle might change up a bit.

For me, there was a bit of change in that I didn’t have the usual swelling and emotional stages I normally have right before my cycle, and though the cycle was normal, I only craved chocolate, which I was able to satiate by buying Hershey’s cocoa and adding a little to my Chia pudding. My wife also made me hot chocolate, which was delightful.

My wife has had a rocky cycle for a while, and has gone for some months without one, or has only a very short cycle. This month, however, she has had a full cycle, and unfortunately, it has been hard. But it’s not difficult in the craving sense. She has cramps, and has had headaches, and feels very low on energy.

I want to share this with you, readers, because if you have menstrual cycles, then you may notice some changes. Don’t worry. Your hormones are adjusting to your changing weight, and that may affect how long, short or even painful your period is the first month. It’s just a natural process that is controlled by your hormone levels, and as you go through this keto-journey, your hormones start to shift right away, which changes everything up. They’ll be changing for the better, so you don’t have to worry, but do keep an eye out because your normal cycle before keto may not be what you experience while you are in, or after, keto.
