Skip the Scale

I don’t have a scale in my house. I think that scales are evil. I really do. We women (and men) obsess over the scale, trying to ensure our numbers measure up to society. Well, they most likely don’t when you’re starting out a ketogenic diet, and they might not for some time.

Scales and weight straight up piss me off. I can go online and find women who are upwards of 50 lbs different from each other, and they all wear the same size 2. I see women who look vastly different from each other and they are the exact same weight. What makes them the same weight? Height and muscle tone. Short people don’t carry weight as well, it shows up pretty quick. Tall people can be surprisingly heavy, they have lots of bones and their weight tends to disperse itself evenly. Certain women of certain tall heights will NEVER be as light on the scale as society demands, because their bone and muscle structure is just too heavy. Is that fair?

What’s not fair is that we pay so much attention to the damn number on the scale. Skip the scale during the week. Only use your weight when you’re recalculating your macros and determining any progress. Because I’ve been doing my research, and I can see that the weight often plateaus, even when the measurements continue to descend. I read a story about a woman who went into ketosis for an amount of time, lost only 3 lbs total, but managed to drop 4 or more dress sizes. 3lbs? Obviously the scale was not a marker for her success. If she’d have paid attention to the scale, she might have never noticed she was 4 dress sizes smaller. She paid attention to her measurements, and saw that she was becoming toned and fit, and lean muscle tightens the body.

I hate scales. They are the symbol of impossible goals and heartache. They encourage self hatred. And I don’t want that in my home. So Charlotte and I will get weighed elsewhere, in a store near us there’s a really cool pharmacy that has this epic machine that takes your blood pressure, water hydration, heart rate, weight, body fat percentage, and BMI all in the same little kiosk. That’s where we got our starting information, and that’s where we’ll go to re-calibrate at the end of the month.

I encourage all of you to skip the scale during the week or during the month. Sure the numbers most likely will be dropping down, but I assure you, no one’s will drop down as fast as we expect, or want it too. It’s depressing. And why bring that into your home while you are working so hard? Just avoid it until it’s necessary, and I think we all will feel better.
