Diwali is one of the most fervently celebrated festivals in India. Amidst all the joy, laughter and events of the festival, there are few opportunities for mishaps to happen. This Diwali, keep yourself and your loved ones safe by following these tips:

  1. 1. Invest in a fire extinguisher: If you wish to burst crackers, ensure you have a fire extinguisher in the house. Keep it in close proximity to where the crackers are being burnt.
  2. 2. Sand and water: If a fire extinguisher is not available, you can keep buckets of sand and water around to douse the flames.
  3. 3. Wear cotton: Stay away from synthetic fabrics as they are quick and easy to catch fire. Wear properly fitted cotton clothes while bursting crackers. Women should tie pallus/dupattas around their waist to avoid
  4. 4. Dispose fireworks properly: Burnt out crackers should be disposed carefully in a bucket of water. You can also put sand to douse the flames.
  5. 5. Place diyas properly: Keep diyas and candles away from any hanging decoration, electrical wiring or curtains in the house.
  6. 6. Roll on the fire: If your clothes have caught fire anywhere, try to step or roll over on it. The aim should be to cut off the oxygen supply to the fire.
  7. 7. Treating burns: In case of minor burns, pour water and apply aloe vera gel to the affected area. In case of major burns, extinguish the fire and remove burnt cloth. Keep the injured wrapped in a clean bedsheet until taken to the doctor.
