Apparently I’m doomed to get the family type 2 diabetes?

So some info about my paternal family: my grandparents, aunt and uncle are all type 2 diabetic. My dad has been pre-diabetic for a year and a half and everyone thinks my other aunt will be diagnosed within a few years (if she’s lucky).

Today was the first time in years I’ve had lunch with all the people mentioned above and the conversation eventually turned to the health status of various people in the family. I’ve lost 40 pounds in the last six months and at 23 I have no intentions of joining the rest of my family in popping medication (or injecting insulin in my grandpa’s case).

The problem is that everyone thinks it’s guaranteed to happen. They think that even if I lose another 70 pounds and long term overhaul my diet and continue to work out every day that I’ll still get diabetes. I don’t want to believe that and I want to avoid that if I can.

Has anyone had a diabetes scare? I’m going to go see a doctor after Christmas and get blood work done but I was hoping someone could share their experience with me and give me some info about what they’ve done to change their situation.
