NSV: Take the broken escalator

Today wasn't an epiphany for me, but it was a milepost on the journey to being a healthier, more mindful, more active person.

If you've ever been to Penn Station in New York, or really, any train station in the world, you know there's usually an escalator that's working, and one that isn't. I was always the person who waited for the working escalator. "Why put in the effort to walk up the stairs?" I might say to myself. "Ain't nobody got time for that". The effort to climb those stairs seemed like too much effort for me. I was tired mentally, physically and emotionally.

Today, I took the broken escalator, and I did it gladly. This represents but a moment of my journey to health. In the scheme of things, it doesn't burn that much more calories. It's not going to outrun an Oreo. But it's an example of how a change in mindset can mean everything. Am I the person who mindlessly aims for the escalator that works? Or am I the person who realizes my body is a living, breathing force that can use stairs powerfully and purposefully? Will I embrace what my body can do for me and revel in that? Am I looking for the path of least resistance, or the escalator less-traveled?

Just one small step for (wo)man, one powerful step for escalator-using-kind.

It was a small moment for me, but it marked such an important mental milestone, I had to share.
