Since its the holidays, if someone offers you a "just this once" treat, you should probably eat it and enjoy yourself.
Actually this is horrible advice. Its not good advice in general IMHO, but its doubly bad for anyone trying to lose weight or work on moderation. Each offer in and of itself isn't hurtful or harmful, but its death by 1000 cuts. Let me give you an example of a typical, yet hypothetical, week of mine:
-Monday - boss brings in cookies he made - would be insulted if everyone didn't have some; later you realize the chicken you were going to cook has gone bad and as a backup, everyone wants pizza
-Tuesday - pick up kiddo from school and they are doing mother/son cupcake dates
-Wednesday - a vendor brings donuts into work, everyone is having them at your morning meeting
-Thursday - kid wants you to bake cookies for his class and he wants to help and sample them with you
-Friday - friends are coming over for dinner and drinks at your house
-Saturday - your spouse wants to try the new family brunch place known for its mile high fried pancakes
I am so lucky that in this life I was given the gift of having so much food that I needed to practice saying "no." I have issues with moderation and I work hard on it. I have lost 40-50 lbs this year and I have done so by allowing myself treats and "once in a whiles" on my own terms. In each of the scenarios I listed, the person/people involved claimed it was "just this once" and truthfully, if I went by that standard I would be having treats every day and for every reason. Thats sort of how I got fat in the first place.
Arguably I could have each of the treats I had listed and just fit them into my day. But I know me and I know my issues with moderation and I know my issues with self control and motivation and at this point in my life I am unable to fit stuff like that into my day over and over again without binging. Everyone is different.
Anyway, its cool to say no. You don't have to eat everything to please people.
