You don't have to eat the same things as your significant other
In 2015, I lost over 40 lbs in preparation for surgery (I went from about 175 to 130 at 5'5" with CICO). After my surgery, I lost the will to lose and maintained at around 135 until 2018, when I started dating my current boyfriend. My boyfriend is the guy who can eat whatever he wants and stay skinny. We cooked together a lot and I was amazed at how much butter and oil he put into things. And his portion sizes are enormous! We made a lot of loaded quesadillas and vegan mac & cheese. I guess social anxiety and whatever other dumb quirks made me feel like we had to eat the same things. He didn't enjoy my healthier recipes as much and his food was easier to make, so we often defaulted to that.
After our anniversary this summer, I noticed my weight had crept up to almost 150 and I knew something had to change. I told my boyfriend how I was feeling. We had a really good conversation and he assured me that it's okay for us to eat different things and he encouraged me to start tracking my food again if that's what I wanted to do. Like... obviously that should be okay, but I needed someone to tell me that. Since then, I've been using MyFitnessPal again and meal prepping healthier things for myself. This morning, I dipped under 130 for the first time since we started dating! I still have a bit more to lose, but I feel good about my progress.
So if you, like me, need permission to eat different things than your significant other, here it is: it's okay to eat different things!
