Put on weight despite being in a calorie deficit

Male, 119.5kgs, 6’2”, been on my weight loss journey since the start of the year, 17.2kgs down. Daily calorie intake is 2000.

The last few months for me were a bit of a shambles, I stopped counting calories, and got a bit lazy with my exercise, overall I maintained my weight, which is better I guess than putting it back on.

I’m back to counting calories and exercising 5 days a week for the last few weeks and I’m really happy with my progress. I do a lot of weightlifting at the gym, cardio is light for me, mainly a 30 min walk at the end of each session, reason being is that I just do not enjoy cardio, and find it very difficult to get any sort of enjoyment or endorphin rush out of it. I always ensure to eat in a calorie deficit and I weigh most foods to ensure I’m getting the exact calories I need.

Today’s weigh in though saw me put 0.3kgs on, which is back to the weight I was 2 weeks ago, frustrating of course, but I’ve learnt a lot over this journey to know that the only explanation for this is a gain in muscle. My smart scale says I’ve gained 0.4kgs of muscle mass.

Would this be the explanation for my weight gain? Obviously I’m just gonna stick with what I’m doing, but just need that peace of mind. I know that muscle weighs more than fat, and I did up the amount of weight I’m lifting this week too. When should I expect my body to adjust to my change in routine, will I start losing weight consistently again if I just stick with it?
