First 20lb Off in my First Month
I did this by reducing my impulsive eating, remembering to exercise, and eating more filler stuff.
To reduce my impulsive eating, I first had to train myself to recognize it. Every time I ate, for the first day, I asked myself why. I caught myself having no reason much of the time. On the times that I just craved flavor, I had some iced tea or an otter pop (20 calories, which can add up, but they're satisfying for their caloric content). I also stick to promises like "I'll eat this yogurt, and then I won't eat anything sugary for 12 hours". My body began to get a sense for this.
Remembering to exercise is the hard one for me, because it's easy for me to justify delaying. So basically what I started doing was focusing on how I felt before and after I exercised. Focusing on this, and imagining exercising when I was relaxing on occasion, made me crave exercise. It turns out it's easier to do something you want, if you can figure out how.
The filter stuff was pretty easy. I just started making quick salads and loaded fresh veggie sandwiches. I also ate a small handful of prunes a day. Observing how I felt after these small meals versus less healthy ones steered my preferences away from oily foods, which I don't digest well; and sugars, which made me slow witted. This all improved my digestion immeasurably.
My approach, as you can see, was rooted in mindfulness and experimentation, plus following conventional wisdom. But most importantl, moderation. When I messed up, I recognized it, and tried extra hard the next day. When I wanted to eat something extravagant, I prepared extra hard. When I was especially mentally ill, I gave myself a break while doing what I could.
I hope this helps anyone out there!
