[27/M] Had poor cholesterol for around 8-10 years. No major health event as of yet, but I'm blaming myself that I didn't take care of myself for so long. Am I too late to turn things around?

Long story short, only recently have I discovered and started getting help for my long-time depression and OCD (which was only recently confirmed by a professional). Even though I've learned a lot about myself in these past couple of years, I don't want to blame anyone but myself as both my mental and physical health has taken a toll. To put it simply, I didn't take care of myself as I should've had.

More than a year ago I lost a loved one due to cancer and mentally I haven't recovered since. I had health anxiety before, but now it's on a whole other level.

I get tests every few months or so, mainly to alleviate my obsessive thoughts regarding my health, but I haven't really honestly tried to tackle the problem itself.

I finally started using anti-depressants and going to therapy. Feeling that it's working, I want to finally get healthy physically as well. However, I can't get over the fear that I might've done enough damage and there's little that I can do. I'm afraid of a heart attack any day now.

Here's my short medical history:

  • I'm 186 cm. (6’1”) tall and my current weight is ~130 kg. (~287 lbs.)
  • No diabetes as of yet, my glucose remained within healthy range all of these years.
  • NAFLD (diagnosed 4-5 years ago; current ALT/AST levels around 195/68), but no scarring so far.
  • Blood pressure sometimes goes up to 130-139/90-99, but sometimes it goes lower than that. No medication prescribed by my GP.
  • Resting heart rate sits at 70-80 beats per minute, but if I go for a walk or when I'm really nervous, it jumps to around 100. Had my heart thoroughly checked a few times. Nothing malignant was found.
  • Here's my short cholesterol history for the past decade or so:
TOTAL CHOL HDL LDL TG
2012 4.78 mmol/l 0.89 mmol/l 3.29 mmol/l 1.3 mmol/l
2013 6.01 mmol/l 0.99 mmol/l 4.21 mmol/l 2.13 mmol/l
2017 5.53 mmol/l 0.67 mmol/l 3.4 mmol/l 4.5 mmol/l
2020 5.97 mmol/l 0.86 mmol/l 4.24 mmol/l 3.22 mmol/l
2021 5.32 mmol/l 0.86 mmol/l 3.04 mmol/l 3.13 mmol/l
  • A few of my doctors that I've talked to are reluctant to put me on statins yet. They still emphasize that through diet and exercise I can get within normal ranges.

Sorry for such a convoluted post. I'm just trying to calm myself down somewhat.
