Does anyone else notice a difference in taste between whey protein isolate compared to whey protein concentrate or similarly named ingredients in powder? (a follow up post)
This follows up the post I wrote last week about trying 5 different powders (the one I posted on r/gainit by far has the most comments), with all of them having a funky taste except for Isopure. One user suggested that perhaps they taste different because because Isopure is pure whey protein isolate while the others aren't. I did some googling and searched reddit about taste differences, but didn't find much, but the idea does make sense*****. Here are all the powders with all the ingredients containing the word whey, in order that the each label lists them in, and with source links:
- Isopure Creamy Vanilla: Whey Protein Isolate (yep that's the only one!)
- Optimizing Nutrition Vanilla Ice Cream: Protein Blend (Whey protein isolate, Whey protein concentrate, Whey peptides)
- Premier Protein Vanilla Milkshake: Whey Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate
- While Isolate is the top ingredient (meaning the highest amount), I'd guess a large portion of it is Concentrate if the taste is noticeably different from Isopure
- Now Sports Creamy Vanilla: Whey Protein Concentrate, Whey Protein Isolate
- Side note: While looking for the ingredients of this one, I realized I ordered the wrong one! I meant to order this other one with a listing that looks very similar but has only Isolate and not both that and Concentrate. It's not much more either.
- That's why I was surprised to see if it had 8g carbs instead of 2 when it was delivered (I was doing Keto + CICO to lose weight, but am now just doing CICO).
- Side note: While looking for the ingredients of this one, I realized I ordered the wrong one! I meant to order this other one with a listing that looks very similar but has only Isolate and not both that and Concentrate. It's not much more either.
- Muscle Milk Vanilla: Whey Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate
* Since writing the original post, I tried Dymatize's Fruity Pebbles and Dunkin flavored powders; I heard that 1st one can get old after a while (I actually thought it would very soon after my 2nd scoop but it's still going strong for me, maybe eventually it'll get old), but both are addicting. I also wanted to compare vanilla to the chocolate flavors so I also ordered Muscle Milk Knockout chocolate and Premier Protein Chocolate Milkshake. Only the later doesn't have a funky taste.
