I (M28) was selected through my university based on my physical statistics to participate in a controlled study about weight gain in young adults. I’ve been slowly gaining weight as a participant for money to test their hypotheses. Figured some folks here may be interested in this bizarre journey!

I (M28) had unintentionally gained some weight this past year (I went from about 160 pounds to 235 pounds from last Summer 2021 to April this year (and I’m 5’9”). The medical school at my university sometimes has sign-ups for participants in some of their particular studies and trials for reimbursement. I saw that they were doing a study on weight gain in young adults and any students who had recently gained weight were encouraged to apply. I was picked, actually, for a particular study concerning abdominal obesity/stomach girth in young males and how certain diets may or may not contribute to this kind of weight gain. From one of the early emails I received:

“You were chosen as a subject for the ‘android fat’ element of the study, within the upper limits of our body fat percentage test base. We are looking at you as an extremity, how huge excesses in belly fat are affected by a particular diet in young age. We were however rather shocked by your statistics, and see you as an important test subject, particularly in relation to your age and stomach measurement. The measurement is not only very high for your age group but also for your weight. A stomach as large as yours is often found on males of a much higher weight. We are therefore interested to see how a continued increase in overall mass will affect these dimensions.

The strict guidelines that we have followed will be explained in full in your document, however the main criteria for your particular test category are:

  • a stomach measuring over 48 inches
  • a weight of between 200-260lbs
  • recently gained at least 40lbs in the last 12 months
  • male
  • body fat percentage of over 30%
  • aged 18-28”

I started as a participant at the end of April and I'm about 260 pounds now (+25 pounds in about 2.5 months). I'm reimbursed for all of my food (+$500 at every bimonthly check-in) and need to follow a strict diet that changes every 2 weeks (and go in for measurements at the end of these periods). I figured some folks here may be interested in asking any questions about this bizarre experience so far!
