Finally reached my goal weight

TL;DR: i (23F) reached my goal weight after 5 years of adjusting my lifestyle and im sharing my experience. Sorry, it turned out long.

It’s been 5 years that i’ve started to lose weight. At 5”3 (160cm), I started at 165 lbs (75kg) and now have gotten to 107 lbs (49.5kg). I will mention calorie counting in this post, so if that’s a trigger for you, please don’t read bulletpoint 3) 🤍

For no reason whatsoever, I had <110 lbs (50kg) as some arbitrary goal. I didn’t even expect to reach it; the last two weeks were full of stuff like pizza and drinks for me. Anyways, I went back to a diary I had when I started to lose weight and noticed that the following things about my habits/mindset changed:

(Disclaimer: this is my personal experience, but it’s not a guarantee or advice that necessarily works or suits your personal journey)

1) The most work is the emotional part. You always start at your worst when changing a habit or lifestyle, so remember that after that first time, you’ve already passed the worst part. Whether that’s your first workout, skipping a snack or trying new vegetables. Also, don’t ever think you’re worth less than others because of your weight. People will show their true colours when they feel threatened by your motivation and how you push through. It cost me a long time to realise that people that were supposed to help me stay on track, actually tried to slow me down.

2) In terms of food: I was always taught to finish my plate and had to finish my meals when I was younger. Now, I try to really think about whether I’m still hungry or if I’m just eating to finish my meal. After a bit, I started adjusting my portions to what I knew was enough (i’m trying to prevent food waste). Drinking water (especially before a meal) helps too. Also, don’t go foodshopping when hungry.

3) (TW: calorie counting) I found that one lbs of fat is roughly 3500 calories (that’s around 7000 calories for a kg). It really helped me to put things in perspective when I wanted to binge but also when I wanted to restrict in some calories. Example: I hate cardio, so instead of running for 20 mins, I didn’t take the candy bar i craved.

4) For me, the most important one: make pictures of your progress!! My weight fluctuated a lot during these past five years (and it still does) and I struggled with muscle weight gain, so pictures really helped me to notice the actual changes in my body.

5) Try to make a lifestyle out of it instead of crash dieting. I still eat unhealthy snacks, I just do it less often or in smaller portions. If you restrict yourself too much, you won’t be able to make a long term lifestyle out of it. Be kind to yourself 🤍 In terms of working out, do something you like! Like nature or exploring the city? Walk a few mins. Like staying inside? Or don’t have access to a gym? Try or youtube workouts (or just dance videos) or games that help you get moving.

6) I noticed that I am an emotional eater as well. I like to celebrate with food, find comfort in food and eat when im bored. Now, i try to reward myself/cope with other things. When i’m angry, I love to work out to get the energy out (could be the gym, a small walk around the block or a very angry Just Dance attempt at Rasputin, lmao). When i’m stressed, I try to take a walk without my phone or read a book, etc.

7) for me, i think weight is gonna be a constant struggle. I’m still insecure about my body, but I also have days where i’m really confident. I wear more alternative clothing that I like, because i’m less worried that people are staring at me because of my body. It’s nice to be able to wear what I like without being ashamed and god did I underestimate how happy I am that my body is hurting less and can do so much more than before. I also found that i get more energy out of eating healthy foods and working out. Too much sugar can make me physically tired now, so I crave it less.

Someone once told me that one salad won’t make you skinny, but that one cheatmeal won’t make you fat. It’s a constant thing I remind myself whenever i’m not eating healthy, but it also reminds me that me being this weight isn’t a given.

Just wanted to share this. Don’t worry if after ages you still aren’t where you wanted to be. You’ll get there. Maybe with some ups and downs, but that’s part of finding a balance. Also, i’m typing this on my phone whilst working on a paper, so sorry if this is a mess. No negativity is meant whatsoever 🤍 i love this community and you’ve all helped me a lot.
