I missed the bus and I’m thrilled

Okay, actually, missing the bus was really frustrating but also thrilling, and here’s why!!

I am down 50lbs since early May (thank you, gastric bypass!) and 75lbs down from my heaviest weight. I recently started a doctoral program that is relatively far away from me. Because of this, I have basically my whole life shoved into a nice, sturdy backpack. I carry a lunchbox with me and throw my phone, house keys, and mask in a Fanny pack so they’re easily accessible. All of this is easily over 20lbs.

Over the past month, I have gotten a lot faster while commuting and walking all over campus with the backpack - I walk 2-3 miles a day now with this extra 22-26ish lbs. I feel great and strong and my body has definitely changed a bit because of the extra cardio.

One of my classes requires us to become deeply familiar with a particular type of equipment. It is bulky, SO heavy, and awkward to carry around so they keep all the equipment in a study, heavy bag.

So Monday morning I have my backpack, lunch box, Fanny pack, AND this bag all strapped to me. I was so weighed down. I missed the subway and then I missed my bus. I literally couldn’t move fast enough. Climbing the stairs was awful and 3/4 of the way up felt nearly impossible. I was gasping for breath at the end of those two flights. It was extremely hard on my back, too. At the end of the day my shoulders were aching.

That night, I got on the scale just to validate how hard the day was for me. Turns out I was carrying around an extra THIRTY-SIX POUNDS. No wonder I couldn’t walk and was in pain all day!

It made me think about how hard this would all be if I had an extra 40lbs on me. I don’t know if I could do it, or, if I had mustered up the energy, I would have been in pain all the time and would have to just my commute entirely just to accommodate how long my extra weight would add to my day.

I feel fantastic now, and so grateful I took the plunge with the surgery. It was so hard at the beginning but so worth it. I move with ease now. I feel so much stronger, a little more nimble (although I will always be clumsy), and so much more capable of of ‘keeping up’ physically and mentally. All of this has contributed to so much more confidence. If you are on the fence about either beginning to exercise or even the surgery, I encourage you to give it a shot. Here’s to another 25lbs and then a weigh-in retry piled with all of my stuff!
