Moving from the mindset “you should NEVER be hungry!”
Hello everyone!
I’m a F(23) who is 4’11 and 125 lbs. I’ve been active all my life, but food has always been the trickiest thing for me.
Despite being small, I always had a larger chest and a bit of a butt. I was a gymnast, so you can imagine how some body dysmorphia came from that. My coach was a dumbass who told me in order to get abs I just needed to eat kale salad everyday. This led to a cycle of dieting on and off for years.
Within the past year, social media has led me to believe I should never be hungry. That being even a little hungry = starving. That I always should be crushing calories. The thing is though, no matter how much I eat, I’m typically hungry. Maintaining weight or losing weight isn’t the hard thing for me. I know what to do. It’s being okay with being hungry.
Recently, I listened to a podcast by Jordan Syatt where he basically said “people are so obsessed with the idea of not being hungry. It’s not a bad thing. In fact, it’s good to appreciate hunger sometimes because so many people are actually starving.”
And Liz Brody, a personal trainer on Instagram said “when I diet, I look at is as a privilege to be hungry, because so many people don’t have the option to chose being hungry.”
These things stuck with me. I guess my question is, how to move away from the idea that I must always be crushing calories and okay with being hungry sometimes? Anybody have any experiences with this mindset shift?
