After 10 years of a mostly sedentary lifestyle, I got quite the shock today
Other than some construction work (which, in retrospect, isn't all that physical), I've gotten really sedentary over the past 10 years and put on about 80lbs of weight, bringing me up to 270.
It nagged at my confidence and all, but I wasn't too worried about it until I went for a "fun" hike today. I've gone on walks and done some light biking, but this hike through some light woodlands and hills had me stopping three times to catch my breath.
Now I've gotten fit before, and I know plenty about diet and exercise, but I've never started from such a low point. I'm not concerned about the numbers on the scale going down on a week to week basis, I'm not concerned about inches or appearance.
Rather, I'm wondering how long I can expect to be getting myself to "normal" fitness - and by fitness I mean being able to simply do things like hike half an hour through light woods without stopping for breath. I don't want to set myself up for failure, because every other time in the past, I've pushed myself hard and gotten good results. I just know that between my age and poor condition right now, it's not going to happen. But I do need to have some expectations.
