Being on the other side of conversations after losing weight
In the last 1.5yrs I’ve gone from a UK24 to a UK14 - huge difference and I pass for fairly normal now.
This weekend I met some new people as I was staying with my gf at their house. The woman’s sister came over and is overweight, not as big as I used to be but probably coming close.
When I was in the kitchen with the woman she was making her sister a plate of food (sister had a young baby in her arms) and she said to me as she put salad on the plate ‘I’m going to make her eat vegetables’. Later, once the sister had gone she we were discussing something else and she again referred to her sister’s weight, more directly this time.
I found this really uncomfortable as I felt bad for the sister and had been in her position for 20 years of my adult life. It shocked me a bit to hear how people talk about people they love, just because they are fat. It also made me realise that this was the first time I was party to that side of the conversation. This woman doesn’t know that I was ever that obese and she seemed to feel like it was fine to say those things.
Anyone experienced similar?
