Check your posture. Check your breathing.
Hey Everyone,
Random lurker here down now 100lbs since September 2017. Something much more critical to my overall health (as if weighing 300lbs was not enough of an issue) was also restoring my posture to get myself out of pain (I’m in constant postural pain).
Anyways, As Ive been working through basic mobility work, I found myself constantly stretching constantly foam rolling trying to fix my desk syndrome over and over -- and a few weeks back I made a very eye opening discovery. I had no longer been using my diaphragm fully, and had learned and programmed myself to only shallow breath. This is toxic to your body over time. COPD, sleep apnea, that shit does not mess around, I mean we live on oxygen and need it to function. Here’s an example of someone talking about it - https://youtu.be/DPCCpKZ-mSE. If you’re not doing this you won’t restore a lot of core muscles - including your abs. Even your function to allow muscles to relax and stop tensing, its in this functionality of diaphragmatic breathing.
The easiest way to test this lay down flat knees up feet ahead relaxed, and put your left hand on your chest, and right on your on your stomach. Draw air in through your nose and allow your belly to expand. Your chest should not be rising, only your stomach. If your chest is rising, your lungs are filling into your chest cavity and your diaphragm is not expanding down to make room for more air.
I can tell you in three weeks of diaphragm work and exercise, my abs have grown 2-3 times in size, as the effort to push air out is a inward force from your abs. Now I show it to anyone curious and most I show it to have no idea it exists. Scary thought for something that should be innate to us, that a desk job and video games and being overweight effectively broke me. I hope this opens at least one persons eyes out there and helps them gain back some of their help. Good luck out there /r/loseit and keep at making positive changes for your health!
