Why Exercise is Crucial

To put it simply, I feel exercise is extremely important in sustainable and healthy weight loss.

My main reason is the national weight control registry. It's a registry of people who lose weight and keep it off for at least a year. 90% of the people in the registry exercise regularly. The most common exercise people on the registry do is walking. Even walking 2 miles per day can burn around 150-200 calories for the average person. That's a HUGE amount actually when combined with calorie counting, especially for women who tend to have lower tdees. My TDEE at my goal weight will only be 1600. That is a bit hard for me to reach every day for the rest of my life. But 1800 feels much more sustainable.

Another reason is obviously for health. I feel most of us want to become healthier by losing weight. But heart disease is the most common killer in most developed countries and it is strongly correlated with inactivity. Walking could save almost 40k lives a year in England alone. https://www.nhs.uk/news/lifestyle-and-exercise/walking-could-save-37000-lives-a-year-report-claims/

My favorite reason is that it improves mental health, allowing you to stick to your calorie goals easier. Exercise is an extremely effective treatment for depression, even rivaling medication in some studies. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3674785/

I find that when I feel good about myself, it's so much easier to stick to a calorie goal. Exercise not only helps me with mild depression, but also builds self-esteem and makes me feel proud of myself.

Just thought I'd share some reasons why I think exercise is very important to sustaining weight loss.
