Work offers a buffet of benefits... one including free breakfast and lunch daily.
Hi there,
Long time lurker, first time posting. I could really use some support. I’ve spent the last 10 years of my life fighting my weight, and it finally caught up to me. 277 lbs.
The heaviest I ever was when I was 16, and that was 250 lbs. I lost a ton of weight by quitting fast food and eating at home. I eventually got down to 175, which is crazy for me to think about now. Overtime I began to lift and work out regularly and bulked up to 210.
Fast forward past worsening depression, binge eating, job struggling, anxiety, and we get to the present where everything in my life, aside from my health, is good.
I work a 9-6 office job, with little to no exercise. It’s an amazing job, with incredible benefits. One of those benefits is free meals *. I struggle with this the most because it’s literally free food, everyday, buffet style. Not just snacks or pizza, but like fully catered meals. Really good stuff. It saves me a *ton of money and I’ve made steps to eat much less of it from when I started (I never go back for seconds and I take smaller portions) but it appears to had little effect on my weight. I also have literally no idea what the caloric content is for this food so for tracking purposes it’s a real struggle, so I’ve basically given up on using MFP.
My mind only thinks in extremes, so it feels like I have to quit my work food or just not track it and hope for the best. We also have a treadmill desks but my weight causes strain on the track (it’s a cheap one) so I don’t want to break it.
Can anyone offer some support or words of advice? Perhaps an alternative to my extreme way of thinking? My logical brain is just like “eat less” but it feels easier said than done. What would you do in my situation?
- Forgo the free food and just meal prep at home? This would obviously draw attention to me as my coworkers all eat together and this might be embarrassing.
- Simply continue to take smaller and smaller portions until I find a balance?
- Maybe bring my own small plates, so I take even less?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Really just looking for some support to help me get to a healthier life. Any helpful tips are welcome :)
