For my fellow binge eaters

The other day, I watched a video on YouTube called “I Try To Quite Smoking in 3 Days”. While I’m not a smoker, the lessons about combatting compulsive behavior really gave me new perspective on binge eating.

In short, the specialist told him to recite the following anytime he felt the urge, because it turns the compulsive behavior into a conscious one and makes the person more aware of the consequences of their behavior. Here’s my version:

I am [food] addicted. I want to [binge]. I can [binge]. I don’t have to stop. But think about the benefits of stopping.

Especially living on my own, there is no outside force stopping me from binging. I buy my own food and don’t have to hide it from anyone. I can eat sweets in the middle of the night, and nobody has to know. So I have to be the one to change my behavior, and doing so has been a real test of willpower, which I often fail.

For me, the benefits of not binging are looking good in clothes, the feeling of being comfortable in my own skin (less bloat too lol), and not beating myself up with guilt. So I’ve decided to focus on that, rather than trying to force the “I have to stop” mentality that has always been unsuccessful for me and so many other people. So far I think it has definitely helped, and I just wanted to share the video in case it is helpful for anyone else who might feel out of control with food.
