I love eating more than almost anything (sharing my favorite low calorie options)

I’m a foodie. I love food. All kinds of food. Gourmet food and greasy street food. I think there are a lot of things that taste better than skinny feels. Not that I would know; I’ve never been skinny. But, this year I’m continuing my diet and it’s hard to restrict yourself to 1600 calories per day when you’re very active and work out. Here are my favorite things to eat that make me feel full and happy and actually taste good when I’m trying to drop pounds (down 17 so far).

1) Amy’s Kitchen brand frozen meal bowls. This is the only good brand of frozen meals I have found. The bowls are organic and vegetarian, taste great and high in protein, and are all between 300 and 400 cal. I love the tofu veggie bowls, pad thai, enchiladas, etc. but they are on the expensive side (~$5 each depending on the grocery store). If you want to count calories and hate Stouffers/Lean Cuisine, trust me and get a few of these.

2) Rice cakes instead of bread. Just bags and bags of rice cakes. You can put so many delicious things on a 35 calorie rice cake and eat it as a snack (peanut butter, honey, avocado, banana, tuna, chicken, hummus, salsa, etc)

3) Almond milk instead of whole milk. You can have way more cereal for the same calories if you’re not drinking whole milk. It’s a little bit sweet so I drink it instead of soda or juice. But almond milk doesn’t really work for me in coffee, unfortunately.

4) If you like eggs, there are about a million ways to cook and use eggs. Learn some new egg tricks! Eggs are low cal and super filling. I put an egg and spinach soufflé on rice cakes last night.

5) Bananas for dessert. I eat one pretty much every day. I put honey or a tiny bit of Nutella on them. Super filling for about 90 calories and good when you have a sugar addiction like me.

6) Broccoli. Eat it with any meat. You can eat a big pile of lightly salted broccoli and it’s like 50 calories. Seriously, there’s no way to gain wait eating a mountain broccoli. The same is true for pretty much any green vegetable but broccoli in particular is very filling.

7) Expanded my soup horizons. Progresso has some great canned options that you can heat up in a pot and add additional ingredients to like fresh chicken or more veggies. I really like their lentil and southwestern soups. I also learned to make my own soups from scratch! Use the diet as an excuse to learn new recipes.

8) Sushi rolls! Sushi is expensive so going out for it is a rare treat, but most grocery stores carry California rolls or tuna rolls and some other rolls. Just make sure you eat them immediately because they don’t last in a refrigerator. A cafe at my university has really fresh rolls for $5 and I get them for lunch a few days a week. An 8 piece California roll is about 400 calories and it definitely works as a whole meal.

9) Corn tacos! You can actually make yourself a low calorie, healthy taco in a hard corn shell or soft corn tortilla. The corn shells are much lower in calories than the flour ones. I fill two corn shells with shredded chicken, black beans, salsa and veggies for dinner.

10) Rice noodles! You can make some great stir fry or a noodle bowl or soup with meat, eggs and veggies using rice noodles instead of ramen or wheat-based noodles. You can also buy rice noodle bowls in the Asian foods section of most grocery stores.
