Exercise is more important than the number on the scale when it comes to cardiovascular health. 150 minutes a week mitigates 6 hours a day sitting at work.
I was lucky enough to be able to attend a health talk by a top cardiologist today.
One of the key takeaway messages she gave us is that it is not necessarily the number on the scale that determines your heart attack risk. She said that getting exercise is more important than the number on the scale, that if you are obese but fit and getting exercise, it lowers your risk of cardiovascular disease significantly. She said that at her hospital, her top nurse practitioner was working with patients to increase their exercise and healthy food intake, and not focusing on the number on the scale.
The other interesting thing they noted was that 150 minutes of exercise a week mitigates 6 hours of sitting a day at a desk job.
Another speaker was there to talk about hormone levels especially as we age, and she said that exercise plays a large factor in helping your body get rid of cortisol and adrenaline, and helps your body regulates your hormones.
They are supposed to be sharing the decks with us later and hopefully that will include the links to their work/studies, and I will share.
Obviously we are in this sub because we want to lose weight, myself included. That's important! But as someone who has been concerned about my cardio health while I'm on this long, slow road to goal weight, I was really glad to hear that I can mitigate my risks with exercise while I lose.
