I finally faced a fear and got back on my bike!

Up until 6 years ago, cycling was my primary mode of transport. I would cover at least 40-50 miles a week, and as a result my fitness levels were incredible. Then, on a routine bike ride, on a journey I did at least twice a day, I collided with an HGV coming out of an awkward junction.

I broke my hip.

Immediately I went from very active to a person who struggled to walk for 5-6 months. I can attribute almost all my weight gain to the 6-12 months following that accident. My hip healed, eventually, but I was left with a crippling fear of cycling on or near any kind of road. Where I lived I was surrounded by cycling routes, but they all involved road cycling, which I just couldn't do.

A year ago, I moved much closer to the start of one of my favourite routes to cycle, a 20 mile round trip which is 100% off road, or through quiet residential areas. I bought a new bike, modified it so I would be as comfortable as possible, and today, after months of putting it off, I cycled!

I did 6 miles. The exercise damn near killed me, but the experience of the wind around my body, the greetings of walkers and other cyclists on the route reminded me how much I missed it.

I never thought I'd get back on a bike, but I also never thought I could possibly lose the weight I gained. Today I am officially 29lbs down, and 6 miles journeyed, and I can't wait to get back out there!
