A few words of advice from someone who’s been a PT/gymnastics coach for 10+ years.

I’ve been ripped, hugely obese and somewhere in between. I read a lot of people having fear of visiting a gym and having issues with dieting when trying to lose weight, here’s my take on this, from someone who takes a very flexible approach to fitness.

  1. Going the gym is an amazing way to preserve muscle while you’re cutting.

  2. The most important thing when losing weight is a calorie deficit, sure you can go do 2 hours cardio and lift weights to create a bigger deficit, but the easiest way to create a deficit is your diet.

Struggling to feel full when dieting? Eat high volume foods that are low in calories. A bowl of broccoli, some 0 calorie jello, snack on pickled onions or look for someone else you enjoy eating bulk of that’s low in calories.

You have to enjoy what you’re doing or you won’t stick to your diet long term, ignore the boring PT’s who demand you must live on chicken and rice (unless you genuinely love chicken and rice) they do not represent the normal person. Don’t buy into a diet plan, learn how to count calories(macro and micro nutrients) yourself, become more conscious of your food choices and through trial and error you will learn what works for you as an individual.

  1. Walking is so incredibly underrated, just go for some walks, walking an extra 30-60 minutes a day will create a bigger deficit and contribute to your overall well being.

  2. If you’re scared to enter the gym, start small, go for a 30 minute walk, watch your calories (I know this is easier said than done) then take your walking to the treadmill for 30 minutes, this will help build your confidence being inside the gym.

  3. Over restriction can lead to binging in excess, which can undo a lot of progress in a short amount of time, it’s fine if there is trigger foods that you can’t say no to, maybe these should be limited or avoided until you’re mentally stronger, but life’s about living too, we can’t always count calories, sometimes counting memories is more important.

TLDR: Don’t take life to seriously, learn to be conscious of your calorie intake, go for an occasional walk, don’t over restrict yourself all the time or you might crash and burn. If you over eat one day, it’s not the end of the world, calories over the week matter more than calories day by day, adjust and lower/higher based on this.
