When should I start doing cardio, resistance training?

Today is my eighty-ninth day counting calories, and I’ve just hit fifty pounds lost. Up to now, the only exercise I’ve been doing is walking my dog (about 1.7 miles over one hour per day) and some light pool exercise, which consists of twenty minutes of swimming interspersed with eight minutes of jogging in four and two minute sets. No particular reason for these specific exercises, I’ve been walking my dog like that for years and the pool exercise is just what I arrived at after experimentation.

As it gets colder I’m probably going to be swimming less (even Florida gets fairly cold), so I was considering joining a local gym that has multiple locations with indoor pools. With how much weight I’ve lost, however, I think I might be capable of jogging, which I’ve been unable to do for years due to an old knee injury causing my leg to buckle.

I know absolutely nothing about working out, so I figured I would ask here: when would be an appropriate, safe time to start doing more intensive exercise? For the time being, should I just continue doing what I’m doing so long as I’m seeing results, or would it be better to start working on cardio/resistance earlier? Is there anything else I should know?

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I appreciate any and all feedback!
