Please Don't Let Fear of Loose Skin Prevent You From Losing Weight

I think it would be safe to say that potential loose skin is something that has crossed most of our minds at some point. Due to the causes of the initial weight gain, the effort to get healthy takes up more of our thoughts and effort; so that can influence how we hope/expect to look at a certain weight. Influencers, social media, and TV and movies also may (DO) contribute heavily to a warped perception of what a healthy human looks like.

I lost 200 pounds... I have some loose skin. I feel I lucked out a little and could very well have had more after losing more than half my body weight, but it is an interesting sight when leaning at certain angles and ESPESCIALLY when in a pushup/plank position. Loose skin does have some legitimate concerns that I don't want to trivialize. Per here " It can cause rashes, infections, and back pain. Plus it can stop you from being as active as you want.", and that doesn't include the disappointment/other mental aspects of it.

However, I would ask you to consider 3 things.

  1. The simple fact that the extra skin was there before you started losing weight. Sure it looks different now, but it got there due to gaining weight and not losing it. That makes it a simple equation of would you rather have "same amount of skin + excess fat OR same amount of skin - excess fat" Being overweight/obese is noticeable in a lot more situations than having loose skin is.
  2. For the aforementioned impacts of loose skin, the ones that include the fat seem to be quite significantly worse.
  3. Is our overweight/obese/problematic mind tricking us in putting weight loss off by using potential loose skin as a scapegoat?

Hopefully this provided some food for thought to those concerned about this. I don't want to speak for everybody with some saggy or loose skin, but I will 100% take myself now vs with the additional 200 pounds!
