Is swimming actually less effective than the gym or is it just that I enjoy it more?

I (20F) used to swim competitively in school and I quit in college. I’ve always loved any kind of water as a child. My entire family is deathly terrified of water so I’m kind of the odd one out and since none of them swim they don’t get why I love it.

Recently to get fit, I’ve been swimming for 30 - 50 minutes a day.

Now, I’m an asthmatic and I used to smoke so the gym used to KILL ME. I’d be panting after ten minutes on the treadmill. But when I started swimming it was a lot easier for me. I still got out of breath easier than I used to but I can keep going for as long as I want.

My family says it’s because a swim is less effective than the gym but I don’t think that’s true and every single website I’ve done research on says so. However I don’t want to be wasting my time if it isn’t helping me as much as the gym could.

However I’m not in as much pain as I used to be in the gym and I’m wondering if it’s genuinely true that swimming is less effective or if my family are just being their usual gaslighting selves..
