Is eating below my BMR a bad thing?
Hi everyone :)
I'm new to this so any advice is appreciated. I have been tracking my calories for the past month, aiming for a 500-calorie deficit a day to lose about 2kg a month. In the first month I lost nearly 5kgs (I think this was largely due to reduced sodium). I told a friend how many calories I'm eating a day, between 1400-1500, and they asked what my BMR is, and I told them it's about 1600. They said that I should never eat below my BMR because it will mess with my metabolism and that I should raise my intake, which would put me in a 300 - 400 deficit instead- which would be between 1600 and 1700 calories a day. I'd never heard anything about that before, I'd always read that a 500-calorie deficit was fine. As it stands, I am sometimes feeling a little hungry, especially if I choose my calories poorly (like on sweets or something), but I'm never feeling unwell or faint or like I'm starving. To be honest, after the first two weeks I've barely noticed any hunger, aside from my usual cues.
Should I raise my deficit? I'm not concerned about the speed at which I'm losing weight, I want to go slow and steady, which is what I thought I was doing. I just don't want to hurt my body and everything I'm finding online is so conflicting.
Thanks for any help!
