Some exercise options for those who don’t know where to start!

Hi everyone! As we know, exercise and nutrition go hand in hand when it comes to weight loss and just health in general. As a person who loves to move her body, I thought I’d give some options for those wanting to start exercising or just don’t like it!

Please, please, PLEASE don’t start off too hard. The last thing you need when you’ve been sedentary is to suddenly be running 6x a week for an hour or suddenly aim for 10,000 steps when they typically only get 1,000-2,000. You need to meet yourself where you’re at. Here are some things you can do to start:

Walking! It’s so underrated and is great for anybody at any size or level of fitness. You don’t need to immediately aim for 10,000 steps a day. Instead, look for doubling your step count weekly/biweekly until you reach 10,000 steps. Or, if you’re not into counting steps, start with a 10 minute daily walk and add 10 minutes weekly until you’re netting 30 minutes a day. This could be one 30 minute walk, 3 10 minute walks, 2 15 minute walks, etc. Just try to get in that 30 minutes! If you’re in an area you’re unable to walk outside, maybe due to safety or terrain, here are some indoor walking workouts that you can do! If I do an indoor walking workout, I typically watch some TV while I do it:

Strength training! It’s so important for our bone and joint health. It makes you feel strong. Like I said before, you don’t have to start off 5x a week. 1-2 times per week is plenty. And, in fact, you don’t have to lift weight to begin. Using your body is a great place to start. If you are someone who has difficulty standing/moving at the moment, I’ve included some sitting, body weight only workouts as well:

Swimming! Seriously. So low impact. Works your entire body. If you have access to a pool, please utilize it! Here are some workouts you can do in the pool:

These are just a few places to start. I want you to know it does get easier. A personal example, yesterday I did an hour long Caroline Girvan full body workout with 15-20 lb weights. If you know Caroline, she’s intense. 6 months ago, a 30 minute workout with 15 lb weights left me a sweaty mess. That workout yesterday almost felt…easy.

Your fitness journey is a marathon. You don’t run a marathon without training for it. The majority of training for a marathon anyways is easy running while about 10-15% should be high intensity. So, think about your own training like that. It should improve your quality of life, not make you hate life more!
