Epiphany about snacking and snack choices

So this may not work for everyone, but it worked for me - and I feel like I should share it.

Something I noticed once I started doing more meal prep - which included adding veggies to more of my meals - was that I was far less hungry. Which, calorically speaking, didn't make a ton of sense. I was having the same or fewer calories, but the addition of the veggies was enough to keep me full and satisfied for a lot longer than if I hadn't had them.

Now, I'm not trained in anything resembling food or science, but I do know that we can technically live off of some really narrow foods. Potatoes almost have everything we need on their own. Most pizza crusts have most of what we need, too. Add a meat and a veggie and your pizza is theoretically nutritionally complete....

The problem is that the nutrients we need aren't present in huge amounts in, say, pizza. So, to get enough, you'd have to overeat in calories and fats to get it done. Eating a fat serving of veggies isn't about filling you up space-wise, it's about filling out your nutritional needs so you DON'T feel like eating 8 slices of pizza. It's sort of a super-fuel - tons of nutrients, but not a lot of calories.

So what's this all got to do with the title and snacking, hm? Well - most people think of snacking as "Huh, I'm a bit hungry, I should grab a snack" and then grab whatever's available - peanuts, chips, etc-

But what I'm starting to realize is you should look at snack opportunities to round out what you already ate.

What do I mean? Well, let's say you had a lunchmeat and cheese sandwich for lunch. Perhaps a bit of lettuce, MAYBE a slice of tomato, and mayo. Maybe even a bag of chips.

When you get peckish in two hours, what you need isn't "A snack", you need a veggie snack. Your body is telling you you're hungry not because you didn't get enough calories, but because you're missing necessary nutrients!

Ever since I've started looking at snacks like this, I've been snacking more efficiently and it's helped a lot. Did I have a dinner of buttered noodles with broccoli for dinner? Perhaps have a bit of jerky as a snack. Round out what I'm eating to hit my nutrient needs.

Give it a go. It might shock you.
