SV: I'm 10 lbs away from my 1st goal of jumping out of a perfectly good airplane!
Long time lurker here, first time contributor. 34/m big time alcoholic with beer, ate anything i wanted. Talking 40 pints/week. And yes pints, as in 20 liters of beer per week. Plus poutines.
I heard in mid june that my friend of over 20 years is getting married! Well, that's great news! Talked to friends about a bachelor party, and everyone agreed on skydiving as its something he's never done. I immediately went to the weight restrictions... 220lbs. Went immediately to the scale... 257lbs. Being 8 beers deep and a belly full of mcdonalds, I told my friends I couldn't join them because of my weight, then immediately went to the shower and cried.
This was my turning point. After i berated/felt sorry for myself, I said to the mirror, "nah bitch, you're turning this shit around right now. A month and a half to lose 37 lbs. Go all in."
I had nothing to lose but weight. I subscribed to /r/keto, /r/stopdrinking and /r/fasting. I've done a keto diet for the last 3 weeks while staying clear of beer (except for 1 beer after a grouse grind, anyone thats visited vancouver will know, and had the occasional gin and soda) and currently I'm down to 240. The best news i heard today was that the restriction is moved to 230 to jump! If i can lose 17 lbs in 3 weeks, i can lose 10 in 3 weeks if I just keep going! My 40 inch waist pants are now baggy instead of tight. Im consistently down a notch in my belt!
What I've done: most days are one meal a day plus snack. For dinner id eat a big salad with lots of ruffage, avocado, some mushrooms and peppers, some seeds like sunflower or almonds. With it I'd cook chicken. Whether it be wings, thighs, or breasts. Salmon is delicious as well! Baked salmon with shallots, coconut milk, cilantro, lime, capers (i have tonnes of salmon recipies if anyone wants to know). Snacks were a slice of salami, a pickle, and a slice of cheese with some olives. High salt no doubt, so not for everyone.
What I've learned: keto diet may not be the magical miracle cure to obesity. The reason why its worked for me is because it restricts my usual diet of beer and everything else. Cutting out carbs has cut off 50% of my diet, and i don't miss it Instead i look at tim hortons and say "mmm donuts. Oh I'm on keto i can't have any of that" and just get coffee. Which brings me to another point!
Any time i was hungry id drink a bunch of water, then get a coffee with cream and cinnamon. Not sure if that's great for everyone, but it really helped my OMAD.
Exercise: just move. Go for walks, go on hikes, paddle a kayak, ride a bike, swim, curl, bocce, frisbee, soccer. Honestly, what worked for me is to go outside and explore, then try your best at anything you do. Try to go outside every day (easy to say in the summer, i know). Even if you don't go outside, just do as many pushups, squats, or leg raises between competitve overwatch ( or any other video game you play, i guess) as you can. Anything you can add to your day helps. If you're into gyms, great! If you love running, awesome! But its not necessary for weight loss. But i promise if you start your day with pushups and squats immediately after your alarm goes off, you'll feel amazing.
Long post, but you're welcome.
TL;DR. too fat to have fun, started keto, its working.
