Been on a 30 pound yo-yo for about 7 years and can't get past it. Need a new strategy please!
5'10" guy. Broad/"strong" looking naturally. Was around 185 (which is "looking ok, but still have a significant belly" for me) for close to a decade. For about the last 7 years, I've been yo-yoing between 190 and 220. Been stuck on a lose/gain loop with a very consistent pattern which goes:
- stasis around 200-210
- Feel bad about self, go on a diet, get down to around 190-195 (170/175 is target)
- Feel better about self, slowly start to creep away from diet
- very quickly end up back at 200-210
- give up, start to feel like shit again.
I never stay at 190 for very long, maybe a month or two tops before I fall off the wagon and pretty quickly go back up to 200 or 205. I'm usually right around 200, in winter it often goes up to 210, occasionally as high as 220.
I'm somewhat active, go on a lot of walks, usually climb a 14k' ft mountain about once every two weeks, go ride my dirtbike (which is physical and exhausting) about once a week. In the winter, I ski 3 or 4 days a week. Day to day, for work I sit at a desk in front of a computer. I also spend a lot of time driving. I was running regularly for a while, had a regular gym routine at several points in the last few years. Working out makes me feel better overall but doesn't help my weight or BMI much, partially because it makes me hungrier. I often actually gain weight when I'm working out a lot. A major factor here is that when I get hungry, I get seriously HANGRY. I go from totally fine to super irritable and HAVE TO EAT NOW, borderline shaky, in a matter of minutes. I should say that I drink a TON of coffee and am suspicious that my caffeine intake is causing or exacerbating this.
I've tried Whole 30, IF, and Paleo, as well as simple calorie counting. I've done Paleo 5-7 different times. I can drop the weight pretty easily doing Paleo, but I can't maintain the paleo diet once I get the weight off. Partly because it's expensive and partly because I have a hard time eating that much meat all day every day. Also because I really like dairy and carbs and eventually give up on the diet so I can have ice cream or chocolate croissants or pizza. or all of the above. Just plain calorie counting doesn't work for me at all. I simply can't make it through the day on the calories that myfitnesspal suggests, even on the lower weight loss setting, unless I load up on protein (I mean, I can make it through the day, but all I can manage to do is focus on making it through the day and ignoring my hunger, I can't have a normal day and get stuff done). I also seriously hate constantly looking at the app to log my calories. I used to be a vegetarian and was pretty stable around 185, which is still too high, but the diet had its own issues, e.g. I was constantly having to eat to fight off my hunger. I'm also found out I am allergic to soy, which made it pretty difficult.
I'm really frustrated and at a total loss about how to proceed. I feel oversaturated and confused by all the available info and can't make head or tails of what to try next or what I'm doing wrong. I'm on the verge of hiring a nutritionist and/or personal trainer even though I can't really afford it. I'm so frustrated with it that I just haven't been trying at all and am back up to 205 and gaining. My goals are: 170, losing this belly I've had for literally my entire life, and better fitness for mountaineering/skiing, as my current fitness level is limiting what I can climb or ski.
Where do I go from here? any suggestions seriously appreciated. I have a huge gut and love handles right now, my face is looking chubby, I feel gross and I want to fix this in a healthy, sustainable, long term way. thanks
