If counting calories precisely stresses you out, there are other ways to lose weight.
I tried counting calories and logging everything I ate. It made me miserable and I wasn't losing any weight. I felt very restricted, stressed and hungry, and had to give up.
So when I finally worked up the motivation again, I went back to what I'd done successfully years ago, which is mostly just cutting out/way down on junk. Less sugary foods. Less takeouts. Less whole pizzas. Switched to healthier yoghurts and upped my intake of fruit and nuts/seeds/pulses significantly. Started being slightly more active. I haven't touched MyFitnessPal again, and just log my weekly numbers in a memo.
It's working (touch wood), and I'm not miserable, hungry or enslaved to a calculator or an app. This more easygoing approach does require you to be quite food-literate, and you will still have to check labels for calories and sugar, but it definitely works better for me. Just thought I'd write this post for any others who get scared off by the prospect of food scales and logging everything you eat like you're in a max security prison.
Edit: If calorie-counting works for you, that's great. Keep doing what you're doing. This post is for people who don't like it.
