How do you stop yourself before eating rubbish??

I've been lurking here for a bit, trying to get motivated to stick to something. I don't need to lose a huge amount, I'd be happy with 5kg at this point. But my problem is i plan well, then when it's meal time I've conveniently forgotten about the plan and i eat rubbish or at least too much for a calorie deficit.

Afterwards i remember i was meant to be eating healthy, but it's like I'm on a one track mind thing to just EAT until i do.

Family means i can't avoid seeing the unhealthy stuff (eg my kids only eat sandwiches for lunch, so bread is readily available, they don't eat salad much so need alternatives for them ) and can't get rid of it altogether.

It's mindless eating i know, but how do i stop it??
