[Century Club] August 12, 2021 - Have you lost or need to lose 100 lbs or more? Here’s a thread just for you!
I have often welcomed those who have lost 100+ lbs (~ 50 kg , ~7 stone) to “the club” and joked that club meetings were on Thursdays. I recently suggested that we try out having a regular weekly thread to talk about issues that are particular to those who have lost 100+ lbs, those who are well on their way and those who are just at the beginning of a journey this big.
Welcome back to the Century Club! Each week I will provide a topic of the day that has been on my mind or inspired by previous posts. However you are free to talk about any topics you think might be relevant to current and prospective club members.
Previous Topics: Aches and Pains - Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes... - Accountability - Elevator Pitches - (Half-)Marathon Training - Celebrations - Water Weight - Comments - Travel - Disconnects - Activity - Years! - Fun! - Rhythms - How strict? - Relationships - Loose Skin Redux - Multiple Centuries - April Fools! - What didn't work? - Milestones - Seasonal changes - Is it worth it? - Surprising Food Facts - Mistakes were made - Time to Vent - Relief Valves - Seeing Objectively - Tips you hate - Fear and Self-Loathing - Starting - 2020 recap
Labels
Today's topic arose from a couple of realizations I had recently about the labels we use to describe ourselves and how we earn those labels.
When I was fat I would apply the label "big guy" to myself. Others may have been less tactful in the label they applied to me such as "fat slob", "lard ass", etc... These were strictly descriptive labels that were not "earned"
In my family life I've been proudest of the label "dad". I'm about to be able to apply the label "empty-nester" to myself for the first time as -- in less than 10 days -- I will have both of my adult children in college and will no longer be a primary caregiver to my children. As I have also recently moved in with my partner I can also no longer apply "single dad" to myself.
In my professional life I've gone from student -> HS graduate -> B.S. -> M.S. -> Ph.D. -> Scientist -> Engineer -> Manager. Each label earned with hard work, focus and in most cases external certification.
In the fitness journey I have been on parallel to my weight loss journey I've gone from sedentary -> walker -> hiker -> jogger -> runner -> long-distance runner and have earned that last label by regularly running 10K+ and 30-40K/week most weeks.
I've borrowed the label "Centurion" from ancient Rome, even though here at r/loseit we're talking about trying to get 100 pounds of fat under our control instead of 100 Roman soldiers. I used the label before I earned it and still apply it to anyone who is working on earning it, but I only really earned it when I crossed the 175 lb boundary.
I've applied the label "maintainer" to myself since reaching a normal BMI, but I only really feel like I earned it this week. According to MFP today is Day 1278 which means that it has been just over 182 weeks (three and a half years!) since I first started logging my food in MFP. Since it took me 21 months/91 weeks to go from 275->170 lbs, I have now been <170 lbs for longer than it took me to lose the weight in the first place.
So what about you Centurion? What are the labels you would apply to yourself? What are you doing to earn them or shed them?
