My best psychological tool: visualizing
Just wanted to share this idea, as it seems to help me stay disciplined through the tough moments, which are frequent because I’m a short woman that doesn’t see fast scale progress. It sounds crazy, but it works for me.
First, I visualize my “ideal self.” My goal self, if you will. She is a runner, she hikes, she kayaks, she eats lots of fruits and veggies, she drinks lots of water, she is disciplined. She has a lot of hobbies that keep her busy. Her fitness is a side effect of a healthy lifestyle, physically and mentally.
Right now, I am about 35 lbs away from that. BUT, that doesn’t mean I can’t live my life like my “ideal self” right now. When I’m feeling down or lazy or unmotivated, I think of that girl and I think of what decisions she would make in a given moment.
She would choose to run. She would choose to drink a ton of water and read a book instead of bingeing. She would start a painting on a Saturday night when the urge to binge is strong. She would go on the hike. So that’s what I do. I do what SHE would do. And eventually my body will catch up, and it’s going to take a long time, but that’s okay. Because she IS me, and I don’t have to wait to live the kind of life I want. I think that was a big problem for me the millions of other times I tried to lose weight and failed. I held back because I thought I had to wait to be a certain size or something stupid.
So I will truck on. I will keep visualizing and enjoying the process, and eventually I’ll get there.
